Measurement accuracy of a patient’s central corneal thickness is essential to determine treatment options. As a result, it’s imperative that your patient's measurements are correct no matter the tester. A recent study, published September, 2014, covers the accuracy of central corneal thickness measurements using a portable, hand held device. According to the publication, the Accutome PachPen™ has been found to be accurate with minimal training and a low learning curve.
Peyman et. al. studied both repeatability and reproducibility for corneal thickness measurements by ophthalmic nurses when using the Pachpen™ handheld pachymeter. Data from two separate users were compared and showed a repeatability correlation value of 0.96 and reproducibility value of 5.08% (Peyman et. al.). Findings from the clinical paper show that the Pachpen™ (Accutome Inc., USA) gives exceptional intra-observer repeatability and inter-observer reproducibility despite training level (Peyman et. al.). Based on these high data values it can be concluded that the Pachpen™ is suitable for use in many different medical settings and by user of different training grades.
Optometrists’ and staff use of the PachPen™.
Due to a similar level of accuracy to other large equipment used for measuring central corneal thickness, Accutome’s hand held PachPen™ is easy-to-use and practical.
Minimal training is needed to obtain consistent measurements of central corneal thickness in patients.
Portability of the hand-held PachPen™ makes it a logical choice in testing CCT in multiple locations/offices.
Optometrists can accurately measure corneal thickness with a hand held device instead of outsourcing the test which results increased patient standard of care, decreased patient travel and provides additional billing codes when applicable.
Ophthalmologist’s use in surgery and the office.
Portability of the hand-held PachPen™ allows for ease of measuring corneal thickness during surgical procedures.
Central corneal thickness can now be measured by the hand-held device as opposed to a large machine which will increase use of office space.
Ease and simplicity of use combined with reliable results increases workflow and decreases chair time of patients, no matter the user.
Significance for education of the hand-held Corneal Thickness Measurement Device
Portability of a hand held device for training Ophthalmology students in a university setting means more hands on training and experience.
The Accutome PachPen™ has been shown to be easy and accurate to use.
Portability of the hand-held measuring device allows for students to be taught in classrooms or where ever is necessary.
The portability and accuracy of a hand-held corneal thickness measurement device, allows for many possibilities in the office, surgical center and classroom. In the recent publication outlining the accuracy and ease of use for the person measuring and the lack of difficulty for the patient, the Accutome PachPen™ shows great promise.
